My Writing

Writer’s Statement:

I know what I like: glitter, beauty, romance, chivalry, and life in abundance. Most of all, I like a good story.

There’s nothing better to me than a well-paced tale with interesting and believable characters. All the plot is well placed and engaging–even if it’s predictable–and the prose is positively poetic. To me, that’s what makes a good story what it is, no matter the medium. To me, that’s what makes me want to write.

As I grew as a writer, from practice and analyzing books and poems, I realized that literature, like other forms of art, has a purpose, so I try to add themes to my later works. Every story has a purpose, even the ones we tell in conversation, though “great works of literature” have loftier goals than simple anecdotes, the principle is the same. My short stories explore the human need to categorize (and subsequently break these categories), forgive, survive, discover, and make life meaningful. A part of me struggles with all the issues I explore, but more than being biographical the stories are fulfilling my need to tell a story.

The rest of what I write is mainly practice. The short prose pieces largely explore human interaction. My poems usually are the result from springing off of an image that I like. I do not mean to dismiss my written work other than my short stories–sometimes this work is better than my larger works–but I have less in mind when I start writing and thus these works are freer and more emotional than the planned stories. It’s luck of the draw to the quality and subject matter of these short works, but often there will be a diamond among stones.

I write because I like writing and my soul needs to speak, tell, and create.

About:

Most of my work is in its first draft phase. However, I will occasionally go back and edit old work without warning. As of June 25, 2008, my prose pieces will be edited thoroughly before published. Anything prior to that is unedited more than a quick read through once. If you judge, you have someone read your first draft of anything and see how good it is. But I am working to improve the quality…so don’t harass.

I update as much as I am able, sometimes every day, sometimes just the weekend. In general, I update more in the summer than in the fall and winter due to the business of my schedule. Comments are always welcome and constructive criticism, as stated above. I also like fan work, if you notify me that you are writing it and not just stealing my stuff.
