Paintings and Drawings » Night Sky
Oil on canvas. I first had the idea for this one during a class presentation on Kandinsky. The presenting group had us listen to our favorite song and then draw a picture that the music evoked. Not sure what song to choose, my MP3 chose “Ain’t Even Done with the Night” by John Mellencamp for me (as it was the next one on the list). From a crayon drawing, I sketched out this painting, which was very different from my past realist paintings. I’m not sure how often I’m going to do the design-style, like this, but it was a nice change of pace.
I like to listen to other people’s interpretations of my work, so if you want to keep thinking about it and come to your own conclusions, by all means, stop here. But I thought I would include my own thoughts for any one who was curious:
For some reason (since it has nothing to do with the song), I drew two parallel night skies: a city with light pollution and a country sky completely dark. The profile is supposed to be Nyx, the Greco-Roman goddess of the night. Legend has it that after Helios pulled the sun across the sky, she would spread out the night with its blanket of stars. I have always had my own interpretation of Nyx, but this is close. I can also see the profile as that of Mother Nature, but this was only after I finished the painting.
