Fiona sat at the window combing through her soft black hair. Her gold eyes would occasionally glance at the kingdom below in a gesture of indifference at the people. Her nights were full of restless hours and the days seemed to be getting longer as winter approached.
“Your highness,” one of the new guards knocked gently and opened the door. She shifted and gave him a dirty look.
“I’m so sorry,” he said looking down at his feet.
She looked down her shortened nose bridge at him patiently. Her tail tapped the edge of the chair in an effort not to show her annoyance.
“Lady Worthington requests your presence at dinner tonight. She wishes to speak to you. She would not say what it was about.”
Fiona nodded and sent the boy on his way. She shifted back and locked the door. She sighed and glanced out and the white cloudless sky. The birds were flying in a single direction, not in their usual haphazard way, as black pearls heading south. The line of trees out the window turned black in the light, the points of their trunks stabbing the non descript sky. She grabbed her dress from the table and put it on over her head.
“Tonight?” she whispered as she put on the blue velvet. It fit close to her body and she inhaled to make it fit. A lady must be of perfect proportion, she had drilled in her head. “Lady Worthington, what could you want to possible talk about tonight?”

Misty and Sky were always seen together. Misty had satin black hair and bright blue eyes with snow white skin. She stepped out of her door and took a breath of the brisk morning air. She wore a black sweat shirt and chocolate brown sweat pants with her favorite green and black boots. She sat down on the steps of her porch in front of the house and took out her sketch book. The pencil was tucked neatly inside the spiral and she pulled it out and watched a squirrel climb up a tree with a piece of bread the size of its body. She put her pencil on the paper, occasionally glancing at the little grey animal as she captured its speed. People walked by her as her clock ticked away the minutes. Finally there was a dinging sound as a bicycle sped up in front of the steps.
"Get on, we’re late!" Sky said pointed towards the second seat.
Misty quietly put on her helmet and sat down. "Come on, Mist! Pedal hard!" Sky said and they went off flying past the people walking on the sidewalk.
"You know, this wouldn’t be so bad if you weren’t late," Misty said into her friend’s ear.
They stopped at the corner of the stop light and Sky reached out to push the cross light. Her freckled cheek was red from the wind and her ears where a bright pink. She pulled her hand out of her clean purple glove and pushed the weathered plastic button.
"This time, it’s not my fault," Sky said looking back at her friend as she walked the bike closer to the curb. "It’s hard when one brother decides he wants to pee on you and the other won’t wake up for school."
"Where’s Cindy?"
"Shopping, for god’s sake! Don’t ask me why it couldn’t have waited until I left. It bloody hell should have." Sky turned her head around and continued to mumble obscenities as they rode across the street and the rest of the way to school.
